Located on the easternmost point of Japan, this cape is the first place in Japan to see the sun. Notappu Lighthouse, which stands at the very tip of the cape, was lit in 1872, making it the oldest lighthouse in Japan. (It was rebuilt in 1930.) Around it are numerous facilities where you can learn about the Kuril Islands, whose ownership is the source of a dispute between Japan and Russia, and tourists flock to the area.
